OPGK Rzeszów hosted students from Portugal as part of the Erasmus + program.

OPGK Rzeszów is primarily a company with many years of experience, which not only employs the best specialists in its field but also relies on young, promising students from all over the world. On February 10, our company was visited by people from Portugal from the Escola Profissional de Ciências Geográficas school, who took part in the Erasmus + project and underwent a month-long internship under the supervision of qualified surveyors.

How were the internships carried out?

In the first days, the students were to familiarize themselves with the principles of operation of the OPGK Rzeszów enterprise. Their duties included, first of all, getting to know the specifics and methods of operation of a geodetic and cartographic company. What's more, they also had to become familiar with the rules of occupational health and safety that apply to specific positions. In the following days, the trainees learned about the photogrammetric processes in detail, and their duties were:

  • Learning the main issues in the field of photogrammetry.
  • Acquiring good principles for collecting data.
  • Development of a raid plan: planning positions (viewpoints), the scope of the raid, photo points, loading the flight area into the Emotion program.
  • Getting to know the SenseFly flight planning application.
  • Preparation of equipment, measurement data, and the necessary tools for fieldwork.
  • Getting to know the drone operation.
  • Fieldwork: preparation and placement of photo points in the field, assistance during a raid with the use of a drone.
  • Participation in the process of aerial photo processing and creating an orthophoto map based on data collected in the field.

Next, the exchange students took part in the works related to the geodetic management of the investment. Their tasks were:

  • To get acquainted with the range of works performed in the enterprise in the field of geodetic investment management.
  • Learning and practical use of programs for calculating results and field measurements.
  • Getting acquainted with the GstarCAD program.
  • Participation in creating a basic map in the numerical system based on geodetic field measurements and field sketches together with the cartographic editing of the study.
  • Getting to know the rules of completing geodetic measurement reports.
  • Participation in works related to completing the composition of geodetic measurement reports (preparation of printouts in GstarCAD).

Finally, they learned the methods of modeling spatial phenomena and objects, including those in the GIS environment. During these classes, students not only learned the basic legal regulations and principles that related to the development and updating of the BDOT10k topographic object databases but also had the opportunity to become familiar with the GeoMedia Professional program. Moreover, they learned about the structures, objects, relationships, and topographic relationships of the BDOT10k databases, then updated the objects based on the NMT source data and orthophotos, and finally performed spatial analyzes to control these databases, and corrected any errors that arose in the process.

What skills did the students acquire during the internship?

During the internship, students acquired practical, professional skills such as using technical standards and legal regulations, processing and elaborating results, creating a numerical master map and cartographic studies in digital technology, and conducting analyzes in a GIS environment.

Importantly, they also learned to follow the principles of health and safety in the workplace, perform their tasks in accordance with the principles of professional ethics, use appropriate tools and instruments to perform specific tasks in the field of geodesy and cartography, plan and implement specific tasks and act as a team, in an entrepreneurial and creative way.

What additional attractions were planned for apprentices from Portugal?

In addition to their internships, students also visited charming places in Podkarpacie, such as the beautiful castle in Łańcut combined with a visit to a beautiful orchid. They also had the opportunity to learn about local attractions, feed alpacas in Kielnarowa, and take part in various, interesting activities during their stay in Poland.
