Geodesy, as a science that deals with determining the size and shape of the Earth, as well as determining the location of points on its surface, accompanies us at every step. The word "surveying" comes from the Greek language and means division of the land. The result of surveying primarily maps, without which most of us cannot imagine our lives today. In the article below, we have prepared 3 interesting facts for you - do you know them all?
The lowest point in Poland is a depression at a height of 1.8 meters above sea level, which is located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Raczki Elbląskie. This place was recorded in the Central Geodetic Office and according to the information contained therein, it was assumed that this area deserves to be called the lowest in Poland. Anyone who would like to visit Raczki Elbląskie can immortalize their stay at aspecial board located there, which is situated exactly in the place of depression.
Interestingly, there is now a dispute about the lowest point in Poland, because the head of his commune, only a few kilometers west of Raczki is Wikrowie, where the height of 2.6 m above sea level is marked. The measurements carried out allegedly confirmed these revelations, but geologists noted that in Raczki Elbląskie depression is natural, while in Wikrów it was caused by human interference.
A tachymeter is a tool designed to measure angles and distances. In geodesy, this instrument is primarily used to measure the position of land points by surveyors. Distance measurement using a total station is usually done using a prism and this type of equipment is called electronic.
The first total station was created in Sweden and was a discovery that allowed for the automation of geodetic work. The most famous total station used from 1960-1990 was optical equipment called Dahlta 010A by Carl Zeiss Jena.
The advantage of this device is the ability to record and save data about distances, angles, and numbers in the memory. The task of the electronic total station is to independently calculate the horizontal distance in automatic mode.
Orthophoto maps are photographic maps that are created by processing aerial, satellite, or drone photos? The word "orthophoto map "consists of three basic features: orthogonal projection, photo, coordinate systems, and scale that refer to maps.
Thanks to them, it is possible to project all tall buildings, objects, pillars, and skyscrapers in such a way that they do not become visual deformation. They are used to make measurements, create maps for environmental analyzes or civil engineering, as references to other maps, in the inventory of excavations, warehouses, and opencast mines, as well as to monitor changes in the field.
